Mid 17th Century English Antique Oak Wainscot Arm Chair

  • Dimensions : Back Height 45 3/4" x Width (outer arm to outer arm) 24" x Seat Depth 16 /14" x Seat Height 14 1/2"
  • Price : £1395

A charming mid-17th Century English oak armchair.

Peg-joined construction and very solid.

Great colour and patination.

With shaped cresting rail over a plain single-panelled back.

The slight downswept arms over the original panelled seat board. Shaped front arm supports and legs (the rear legs of plain form) united by stretchers.

This is a great looking chair that is ready to go.

Condition - Original timbers throughout aside one historically replaced leg (most probably replaced during the early 18thC in our opinion).  There has been much discussion between us since acquiring this chair to decide which leg has been replaced and we have concluded that the chamfered leg, albeit showing a great degree of age, is the one that was replaced. However, a very dear dealer friend of ours wondered whether the chair had originally been constructed using two recycled legs from earlier chairs! Perhaps the purchaser can make up their own mind.  Whatever the tale, this is a great looking chair and a real conversation piece too! Also worthy of note is the old blacksmith repair to the underside of the seat board and batten and very minor timber fillet in the cresting rail.
