A deeply characterful and historically resonant mid‑19th‑century English carved oak box, modest in scale yet rich in narrative, fashioned from 14th‑century timbers salvaged from York Minster following the devastating 1868 fire. The survival of this material — already five centuries old at the time — lends the piece a rare and compelling ecclesiastical provenance.
The box is carved with foliate and scrollwork ornamentation, including a central roundel to the lid, bearing an intertwined monogram of "GMS", the initials of the original owner who commissioned the box, and executed with the confident hand of a Victorian craftsman working with medieval oak. The front panel features a wooden key escutcheon, with a decorative cartouche below incorporating a swan - a homage to the lady who had the box made. This is flanked by decorative scrollwork and foliage. One end panel bears the date 1360 in a shield‑shaped cartouche, indicating the age of the timbers used, and the opposite end panel again features a shield-shaped cartouche with the date 1868, referencing the year of the fire. Verso, the rear panel bears the inscription "York Minster" and is again flanked by similar scrollwork and foliage.
The lid opens to reveal an interior void of any fittings.
Accompanying the box is a remarkable chain of handwritten provenance:
The oak was originally part of the fabric of York Minster in AD 1360. The Minster itself was constructed between AD 1220 and AD 1472, replacing an earlier church on the site, its origins first recorded in AD 627.
After the 1868 fire — caused by a dropped torch during roof repairs — the timber was given to Miss G. M. Swann of York, who had the box made.
It was later passed to her sister, Miss E. M. Swann, who gifted it in 1927.
A further attached note records a Christmas 1952 gift to Beatrice Bland, signed F. G. Drury.
Such continuity of custodianship, preserved in original period handwriting, elevates this piece far beyond the decorative: it is a tangible fragment of York Minster’s medieval fabric, transformed, cherished, and documented across generations.
A rare opportunity to acquire a small but potent relic of one of England’s most important ecclesiastical buildings.
Provenance: England. 19th Century, circa 1868. See above.
Material: Oak with brass hinges.
Condition: Very good. Please refer to the images. The box presents well, with age‑appropriate wear, surface marks, and patina consistent with both its medieval origins and 19th‑century construction. The carving remains crisp, the oak richly toned, and the historical notes are included as found.
Dimensions:
Width: 28.5 cm (11.2 in)
Depth: 12.5 cm (4.9 in)
Height: 11 cm (4.3 in)
For the collector who values authenticity, narrative, and the quiet power of objects that have witnessed centuries, this modestly sized box offers something extraordinary: a direct, documented link to the medieval structure of York Minster itself. A rare survivor, beautifully carved, lovingly kept, and ready for its next chapter.
