This small, assertive fragment of Victorian ecclesiastical woodwork is now presented as a sculptural object in its own right. It was carved from a single piece of quartered oak.
The terminal takes the form of a stylised trefoil of leaves. Each lobe is drawn to a soft point and centred on a swelling boss, and the leaf margins are defined by raised, rolling edges. Between the lobes, four deeply pierced eyelets open the design to the light. Beneath them, the leaves gather into a fluted stem, its veins converging in a tight sheaf.
The vocabulary is the archaeologically minded Gothic championed by A.W.N. Pugin and his successors. It is a deliberate, disciplined reinterpretation of the stiff-leaf and foliate ornament of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, characteristic of the great mid-Victorian programme of church building and restoration.
The flat reverse and the stepped, moulded edges show that the piece was worked from moulded stock and set against a ground. It most likely served as a cresting, canopy or tracery terminal from a chancel screen, choir stall or reredos.
The oak has a deep, mellow colour, with a pronounced ray fleck to the sides and a dry, crisp surface that preserves the sharpness of the carving. Mounted on a later ebonised stand, it makes a striking cabinet piece: architectural, faintly botanical and quietly devotional.
Provenance: England. Mid-19th century.
Material: Carved quartered oak; the stand of later ebonised softwood with a black-painted rod.
Condition: Good, with crisp carving throughout. There is minor wear to the leaf edges and bosses, and a small surface mark to one side edge. The reverse shows stain and old surface marks consistent with its original fixing against a ground. Overall, the colour and patina are pleasing. The stand is later and in good order.
Dimensions: Overall height (including stand) 6⅛ in (15.5 cm); fragment height 3⅜ in (8.5 cm); width 3½ in (9 cm); depth 1 in (2.5 cm)
