A superb 17th-century Scottish school antique oil on canvas portrait a Gentleman and his wife.
Portrayed within a woodland setting. Their castle in the background.
The subjects and artist are unknown although, the painting was undertaken by a very accomplished hand. The castle has yet to be identified. If confirmed, the couple could no doubt be identified too.
Provenance - Understood to originate from a private collection in the South-East of England.
Condition - The canvas is in two parts and a feint joint running vertically is evident under close inspection between the male and female. The canvasses have been laid on to much later wooden board (most probably 20thC). The frame is associated and again of a much later date. There is evidence of cleaning and minor retouching. The painting displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
