A late 17thC Scandinavian antique oak kist of modest proportions with a later scratch-carved date "1862" inscribed some 170 years after the box was first constructed.
With a domed lid above a carcass constructed from five planks joined together with decorative iron strapwork.
Each side has an iron carry handle. The front panel is heavily carved with foliate forms and the initials "NBB" and has an iron escutcheon attached in the form of a love heart. The lock and key still function.
The kist is supported on a plank base with moulded outer edge and below, four turned feet of baluster form remain.
The lid is joined to the carcass by way of two iron strap hinges and opens to reveal an interior fitted with a till/candlebox.
Condition - The box is original aside the baseboard which may have been replaced at some point. The box displays very well and oozes all the charm of the period which it relates. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
