A primitively made mid-18th century antique wax jack in the form of a flintlock pistol.

Gustavian/Swedish in origin.

Originally used at the writing table to melt sealing wax, light candles, etc.

This example is particularly nice and unusual. Despite being of primitive form, it has been made to resemble a flintlock pistol.

With a shaped and elongated stock, complete with an iron trigger (decorative and non-functioning), supported by two shaped iron legs at one end.  The taper is held securely between a U-shaped holder with an axle to the centre and flanked by a large flange at each end. To the front, a shaped piece of iron supports a sprung iron cutter. The wax taper is held and fed through the cutter.

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - Please refer to the images. Offered in "untouched country house condition". The sprung cutter of the taper-holder is intact and operational. The ironwork has oxidation throughout. There are losses to the right side of the stock where a rebated, decorative, lock plate would have once been situated. There is also evidence on the left side of the stock that another rebated lock plate was once situated there. The lock plates have long since been lost.

Size - Length 32 cm x Height (max at iron cutters) 17 cm (12 5/8" x 6 5/8")
