A superb small 17th‑century English oak chest of drawers, distinguished by its geometric moulded front, a defining feature of Restoration‑period joinery. Compact in scale yet architecturally bold, this is the sort of chamber or parlour piece made for a household of means — practical storage elevated by sculptural design.
The façade is arranged in classic raised geometric panels, sharply shadowed and beautifully proportioned. The drawers retain their period brasswork, with pierced backplates and drop handles that sit elegantly against the deep, time‑mellowed oak.
The top shows the gentle undulations and rich colour movement that only centuries of domestic use can produce. Panelled sides, honest wear, and original stile feet complete a piece that is both functional and deeply characterful. A jewel of early English case furniture in a rare small format.
Provenance: England. 17th-century. Found in Kent.
Material: Oak with brass door furniture.
Condition: Excellent period condition with expected age‑related wear. The oak has developed a deep, natural patina; minor marks, shrinkage lines, and surface irregularities are consistent with 17th‑century domestic life. Brasswork shows age and oxidation appropriate to period fittings. Structurally sound and ready for continued use.
