Set of Three Large 17th–18th Century Antique Carved Limewood Heraldic Helms with Coronets

A fine and rare set of three antique carved limewood heraldic helms, each surmounted by a carved coronet, retaining much of their original polychrome decoration and gilt gesso surface.

The three helms display notably different forms in accordance with heraldic convention: the largest and most impressive example — measuring approximately 23cm (9ins) in length — is carved as an open-barred peer's helm, the barred visor denoting noble rank within the heraldic tradition; the remaining two are carved as closed helms, each with a differently styled coronet above, and each measuring approximately 18cm (7ins) in length. All three retain traces of their original painted surface in gilt gesso, applied over the carved limewood ground in the manner typical of period heraldic decorative work.

Helms of this type formed part of a full heraldic achievement, positioned above the shield and below the crest, and would originally have featured as elements of a larger armorial composition — most likely an overmantel panel, funerary hatchment, or decorative scheme within a significant country house or ecclesiastical interior. The presence of three examples suggests they derive from a composite armorial panel incorporating multiple allied or quartered arms.

Sets of heraldic helms of this scale and quality rarely appear on the open market; a superb opportunity for the serious collector of early woodcarving.

Provenance: Northern Europe. 17th - 18th Century.

Material: Limewood and gilt gesso.

Condition: Good, honest condition throughout commensurate with age. Retaining much original gilt gesso surface decoration. The largest helm has some historic structural losses to the helm brim. Surface wear and patina consistent with genuine age and use. Displaying very well as a group.
