A rare set of four mid-18th-Century English antique Delftware plates.
Each plate is of plain circular form with a reeded rim, painted in polychrome high-temperature colours in the celebrated "Fazackerley" palette associated with the Liverpool potteries of the third quarter of the eighteenth century. The cavetto of each is centred by a full-blown stylised peony issuing from a clump of cobalt-blue stylised rockwork, flanked by a slender manganese-outlined fence-and-tree motif in the Chinoiserie taste, the border scattered with sprigs of yellow five-petalled flowerheads and green foliage. The reverse plain, glazed to within the footring, the exposed body a warm buff earthenware consistent with English manufacture, unmarked as is customary for wares of this type and period. The set is remarkably consistent across all four examples, both in painting and in wear, suggesting a shared service history.
This distinctive combination of blue, yellow, green and manganese, deployed against a rock-and-flower composition of this kind, is strongly associated with the Liverpool delftware potteries active in the Fazackerley/Pennington circle from the late 1750s onward, and English attribution is further supported by the body colour and glaze character visible to the reverse.
