Rare Mid 16thC Antique Raerenware Three Handled Salt Glazed Stoneware Jug or Dreihenkelkrug, Circa 1550

A rare mid-16thC German antique stoneware three-handled jug, circa 1550, decorated in saltglaze.

Known as "dreihenkelkrug's", these jugs were made in Raeren in Germany. The area now falls within the Belgian border.

Similar three-handled examples are in the collection of The Raeren Museum.

An image of a similar jug is also seen within the painting entitled "The Peasant Dance" by Pieter Bruegel The Elder (circa 1525-30 - 9th September 1569). Bruegal was one of the most significant artists of Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting. A painter and printmaker, he was known for his landscapes and peasant series (known as genre-painting); he was a pioneer in making both subject types the focus in large paintings.

Condition - as per the images. The rim, handles and neck have been re-attached. The jug retains its original kiln mark.
