A late 18thC Dutch antique delftware plate decorated in underglaze blue, depicting a fleet of schooners / fishing vessels in full sail.

This is an individual plate No.4 from "The Herring Catch" series, entitled "No.4 De Buijsen Lepen In Zee" - Translated, "The fishing boat sales out to sea."

The series of plates, made to celebrate the wealth generated by the Herring Industry of Holland, including this example, were manufactured circa 1780, by the De Porceleyne Bijl (The Porcelain Axe Factory - Est. 1657 - Closed 1803), Delft, Holland. This can be identified by the hatchet mark verso, introduced in 1764.

Another example, from the same series, is held in the collection of The Minneapolis Institute of Art, USA.

Condition -  The rim has some fritting and a two larger chips in the upper and lower left quartiles. Please refer to the images. This remains a very rare plate regardless of condition and overall, displays well.

Size: Diameter 23 cm (9")
