A rare survival from the late 17th century, this carved oak child’s doll dates to circa 1680 and is English in origin. Sculpted with stylised anatomical features and a sense of quiet presence, the figure retains a remarkable sense of character despite its minimalist form. The carving is naïve yet evocative, with visible tool marks and a rich patina that speaks to centuries of handling and age. Likely intended as a cherished plaything or devotional object, it offers a poignant glimpse into early childhood and domestic life in post-Restoration England.

The figure is carved from solid oak, with a darkened surface from age and oxidisation. Its simplified limbs and torso suggest it may have been dressed or adorned, and the expressive facial features—though worn—still convey a sense of individuality. Whether viewed as folk art, a relic of early craftsmanship, or a collector’s curiosity, this piece holds both historical and emotional resonance.

A rare and evocative object for the serious collector of early English vernacular art, childhood ephemera, or devotional sculpture.

Provenance: England. 17th century.

Material: Oak

Condition: In good, honest antique condition with the expected wear for a late 17th‑century piece. The surface shows a rich, well‑aged patina, with small historic knocks and age lines typical of old oak. Losses to the arms are long‑established and stable as are the losses to the lower limbs. The carving remains solid and displays beautifully, with plenty of character and charm from centuries of handling.
