A rare and characterful late‑18th‑century English snuff box, modelled as a double‑barrelled pistol, dating to around 1780-1800. Retaining its original painted decoration, this is a wonderfully imaginative example of Georgian whimsy — the sort of playful object that delighted its owner while still serving a practical purpose.

The form is crisply moulded, with the twin barrels, hammers and stock all clearly defined. The opening for the snuff box is where the trigger would have been positioned. The surviving paintwork is particularly appealing, offering a glimpse into the object’s original vibrancy. These novelty snuff boxes were produced in small numbers and are now increasingly scarce, especially in such honest, untouched condition.

A charming and unusual piece for collectors of Georgian treen, snuff paraphernalia, or early English folk art.

Provenance: England. Late 18th century. Ex-Tony Chapman collection (bears his initials and reference number to the underside of the lid in the usual silver ink that he used).

For a similar example, see P. Hornsby, 'Pewter of the Western World 1600-1850', p. 355, pl. 1229.

Condition: Expected age‑related wear to the painted surface—no over‑restoration; Split to the tip of the pistol stock (handle), and some losses to the painted decoration.

Dimensions: Length: 11 cm (approx. 4⅜ in)
