A rare 18th-Century antique pewter flagon originating from Jersey, part of the Channel Islands.

Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times, with evidence of early settlements. It became part of the Duchy of Normandy in 933 AD. Following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 AD by William the Conqueror, the Channel Islands became part of the Anglo-Norman realm.

Jersey remained loyal to the English Crown while the rest of Normandy was lost to France by the English Monarch King John in 1206 AD. Over the centuries, it faced invasions, particularly during the French Revolutionary Wars and Germany and the Nazi's in World War II and enjoyed a unique status as a British Crown Dependency.

Today, Jersey remains a Crown Dependency, a territory under the sovereignty of the British Crown but not part of The United Kingdom l, with its own legal, fiscal, and administrative systems. While the King is the head of state and the UK retains responsibility for defense and foreign affairs, Jersey is not represented in the UK Parliament and has a significant degree of autonomy, including its own government and international identity.

This ewer is a rare find with a heart-shaped lid with a twin acorn thumb piece and a plain baluster body and a single reeded circular foot.

It bears the touchmarks "IN", thought to be the touchmark for Jean Noel to the underside of the lid, and is inscribed "PLF" to the handle.

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - There are some age-related minor dents and pitting to the footrim which is not uncommon, and the main body but overall, it is in good order. Please refer to the images.

Size - Height 28 cm (11")
