A rare early 18th Century English School antique oil on canvas portrait, circa 1720.

Depicting a bewigged gentleman gardener wearing a white stock and red tunic, holding a knife in his right hand and a cocoa bean in his left. The portrait may represent an English plantation owner or gardener of the time. Portraits of both a gardener and that of a cocoa grower are incredibly rare.

The sitter and artist are unknown.

Sourced from a private London-based collection.

Presented in its original gilt gesso frame of the period.

Condition - Offered in unrestored condition. Please refer to the images where surface marks and a tear on his right hand are apparent. The canvas has been re-lined historically. There are gesso and gilt losses to the original frame commensurate with age.
