A cased set of eight 17th-century graduated bronze apothecary weights, each weight resting within the next, all bearing marks and encased inside the hinged master cup bearing various stamped marks, including that of the number "16" and an "S".
The smallest weight, also known as a "pill," is not necessarily intended solely as a measure of weight, but rather to keep the remaining weights securely in place within the master cup, therefore preventing them from rattling.
These weights were essential tools for early pharmacists and physicians, and were used to measure medicinal compounds accurately when apothecaries were central to public health. Their design reflects both scientific utility and artisanal craftsmanship.
From the private collection of a weights and measures enthusiast in South-East Yorkshire, this set is a rare survivor in excellent condition. A tangible link to early modern medicine and Iberian trade.
Provenance: Spain. 17th century. From the private collection of a weights and measures collector in South-East Yorkshire, England.
Condition: good overall. The master cup has built up a lovely patina on the external surface over the centuries. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
Size: Master Cup Height 4.45 cm x Max Diameter to the outer edge of the clasp 5.71 cm (1 3/4" x 2 1/4")
