A Rare 19th century Clock Maker's sign, circa 1850-1880.
This is an original sign, not a reproduction.
English and American examples are known.
The sign takes the form of a large golden pocket watch with an "enamel" dial.
Constructed from turned and gilded pine, mounted with a painted tin clock face.
Surmounted by a large bronze suspension ring on a wrought iron pommel.
The painted tin dial is original to the sign (in our opinion), but it may have been taken from an earlier clock when the sign was made in the 19th century. This is possibly indicated by the blocked winding holes.
Over the years the wooden surround has shrunk by approximately 1/4 of an inch across the grain. This is a good indication of age and is to be expected with an earlier piece.
The painting on the dial is original and it has not been over-painted.
A similar example was sold by Sotheby's, New York: "Sculptural Fantasy, The Important American Folk Art Collection of Stephen and Petra Levin, 10 October 2019", lot 90 ($5625).
A rare example of 19th Century Folk Art.
The sign makes a bold decorative statement and would look wonderful displayed within an early or a modern interior.
Condition:
Offered for sale in original "attic found" antique condition as per photos. The hand(s) are missing. It would be easy to source appropriate longcase clock hands online.
The dial is weathered as per photos. The painting to the dial is original and has not been over-painted as stated earlier. Original large bronze suspension ring. No restoration or repair.
Size:
Height to the top of the iron pommel, excluding bronze ring: 18 inches, 45.8 cms
Diameter of the wooden surround (along the grain): 14 1/8 inches, 35.9 cms
Diameter of the wooden surround (against the grain): 13 7/8, 35.3 cm
