A Rare 18th Century English, Sussex Farmhouse-Made, Antique Treen / Antique Elm Eating Bowl, Circa 1750-1800.

Pinto, in his book of "Treen and Other Wooden Bygones", Page 89 and Plate 84, attributes these turned elm wooden bowls to one Sussex-based farmhouse. Approx 60 "log bowls" approx 3" in height were made but sadly dispersed over a period of time.

He writes that the shape of these bowls is very rare for an English form, being more characteristic of the East and Middle East.  Bowls of this form are even depicted in Pieter Breughel the Elder's 16th Century peasant paintings.

Opportunities to offer these bowls for sale are few and far between.

Provenance - Sourced within East Anglia.

Condition - dry surface albeit patinated. The iron hoop that once surrounded the rim of the external surface is long since lost. The bowl does have a charm of its own. Please refer to the images for further details. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size: Diameter 13.5 cm (5 1/4") x Height 8 cm (3")
