A beautifully preserved 17th‑century English child’s bonnet, worked in soft linen with delicate hand‑embroidered floral and foliate motifs in gentle, time‑worn tones. The bonnet is constructed in the classic segmented form of the period, each panel outlined with dark stitching that emphasises its shape and craftsmanship. A fine ruffled edge frames the face, while the original yellow ribbon ties remain intact — a rare survival in its own right.
Pieces of early children’s clothing are exceptionally scarce, as they were typically worn hard, passed down, repurposed, or lost to time. This example retains a remarkable amount of its original character, offering a poignant glimpse into domestic life and textile practice in the later Stuart period. Its embroidery, though modest in scale, reflects the decorative vocabulary of the era: stylised flowers, curling stems, and soft organic forms rendered with a practised hand.
