This wall‑hanging cupboard, constructed from oak with a pine shelf and pine backboards, is a rare survivor of 17th‑century Welsh vernacular craftsmanship.
Estate‑made and likely constructed to fit a specific alcove or niche, it reflects the ingenuity of rural makers who worked outside formal carpentry traditions. The door is particularly striking, with its shaped design and panel work characteristic of 17th‑century vernacular furniture, lending individuality and presence to the piece. Note the hand-forged iron butterfly hinges, too!
Cupboards of this type were often used for storing spices, valuables, or household provisions, and their compact proportions made them ideal for wall mounting in farmhouses and estate cottages.
