A rare 16th‑century wooden goblet of this scale and survival is an exceptional piece of early domestic drinking culture, of the Tudor period, when small, turned or hand‑carved wooden vessels were used in both humble and middling households. The form is simple and deeply tactile: a rounded bowl rising from a short stem and spreading foot, all worked from a single block of timber. The surface shows the uneven wear, shrinkage, and softening of edges that only five centuries of handling can produce, giving it the unmistakable presence of genuinely early treen.
The goblet’s proportions are compact and functional, with a thickened rim and a slightly waisted stem that fits naturally in the hand. The patina is rich and varied, with deep oxidisation to the exterior and a smoother, burnished interior from long use. Wooden drinking vessels of this date rarely survive, as most were lost to wear, fire, or simple decay; those that do tend to be fragmentary or heavily restored. This example remains honest, untouched, and full of the quiet authority that collectors of early vernacular woodwork prize.
A scarce and evocative survival from the Tudor domestic world, offering a direct, intimate connection to everyday life in the 1500s.
