A rare 15thC English antique "spade iron".

It is also very sculptural, almost reminding us of two birds standing back-to-back, their necks outstretched, and beaks raised upwards.

What is a spade iron?

The Museum of London has a similar example in their own collection.

The two-sided iron-shod wooden spade was one of the most common to be produced, with the iron blade being a standard feature after the fourteenth century. Spades were usually constructed from a single piece of oak or ash, formed by a carpenter. The spade iron was then attached to the wooden blade and used as a cutting edge to dig into the soil.
