A rare and characterful 15th‑century English medieval ridge‑tile finial, in relief with a stylised human head and retaining traces of its original red glaze. This expressive figure — with rounded features, open mouth, and simple incised eyes — is typical of the sculptural roof furniture produced in East Anglia during the late medieval period, particularly across Norfolk and Suffolk, where decorated ridge tiles adorned churches, guildhalls, and high‑status domestic buildings.
Formed in fired earthenware and mounted on its original rectangular tenon base, the finial would once have crowned the apex of a medieval roof, serving both a decorative and symbolic function. Weathering, surface erosion, and pigment loss are entirely consistent with centuries of exposure, giving the piece its compelling, time‑worn presence.
These carved heads are increasingly scarce, especially examples with surviving colour and strong facial definition. Today, they stand as sculptural artefacts in their own right — powerful fragments of medieval architectural storytelling.
A superb piece for collectors of medieval ceramics, architectural salvage, or those seeking a statement object with deep historical resonance.
Provenance: England. East Anglia - Norfolk/Suffolk. 15th-century or possibly earlier. Red lead glaze over coarse-fired earthenware is highly indicative of classic East Anglian medieval ceramic manufacture.
Decorated ridge tiles were a hallmark of 14th–15th century English architecture, especially in East Anglia. Workshops produced a wide variety of forms, with red/copper-oxide lead glaze being the most common decorative finish on ridge tiles and finials. Subjects included:
Human heads and masks
Grotesques and mythical beasts
Bishops, kings, and saints
Heraldic and symbolic motifs
These finials served several purposes:
Decoration: adding visual richness to church and domestic roofs
Protection: sealing the ridge line against the weather
Symbolism: warding off evil, asserting status, or marking ownership. This example, with an expressive face and open mouth — very typical of ridge tile figures, is thought to have an apotropaic (evil-warding) function.
Surviving examples are often fragmentary; complete heads with recognisable features are highly sought after.
Complete or largely complete ridge tile figures with good glaze survival are genuinely collectable. Norwich Castle Museum, the Castle Mall excavations and various Norfolk fieldwork have produced comparable pieces.
Material: Fired earthenware with lead glaze.
Condition: Please refer to the images.
Dimensions:
Height: 30 cm (12 inches)
Width: 14 cm (5.5 inches)
Depth: 7 cm (2.75 inches)
|To summarise, this is a rare East Anglian ridge‑tile head with superb character, making it a standout piece for any medieval collection.
