A rare and evocative 17th‑century primitive folk art wooden doll, commonly referred to as a “Stump Baby”, carved from a single piece of wood and standing 17cm tall.

These early child’s toys were always known as "stump babies" and not refered to as "dolls" until the 17th-Century, in fact, the word "doll" was not associated with a child’s toy until this time.

They were typically made by hand in rural communities, characterised by their simplified stump‑like form, minimal detailing and honest, naive craftsmanship. This example displays strong age patina, surface wear and tool marks consistent with genuine 18th‑century origin, reflecting centuries of handling and use.

The doll’s primitive silhouette and expressive simplicity place it firmly within early European and British folk art traditions, making it highly desirable to collectors of antique toys, folk sculpture and early vernacular art.

An exceptional survivor, rich in historical character and well suited to display within a period interior, museum‑style cabinet or serious folk art collection.

Provenance: England. 17th-Century.

Material: Carved hardwood.
