Mounted on its original oak base with twin blades, the steel lever with turned wooden handle moves up and down in a cutting motion.

What are sugar cutters?

We now buy sugar in granulated form, or shaped into cubes, ready for use.

In earlier centuries, until the 19th Century, sugar was sold in much bigger lumps, or as a large 'cone', and the housewife, cook or maid would have to cut it up herself, using these sugar cutters. Nowadays sugar mostly comes from sugar beet. When this sugar cutter was in use, sugar would have come from sugar cane, grown in the West Indies and imported to the United Kingdom.

Provenance - Ex-private Cambridge-based collection.

Condition - Good as per the images. There is surface wear to the wooden base and surface oxidation to the iron commensurate with age. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size - Overall Length 36 cm (14 1/4")
