A pair of stylised late 16th-century English antique carved oak terms.
Possibly representing a husband and wife and their two children. We were simply drawn to the naivety of these carvings.
The male figure, with scrolled pediment, is portrayed standing full-length with stylised hair and a moustache, swathed in robes and supported on a decorative plinth base incorporating a floral rosette. The female figure, again with scrolled pediment and standing full length, is portrayed with long hair, dressed in robes, holding a baby in her arms with an older child holding firmly on to her petticoat. Again she is supported on a plinth base with decorative floral rosette.
The female carving is naively scratch-carved with a date of "1597".
Provenance - Acquired from a private Norfolk-based collection.
Condition - please refer to the images. The carvings have been painted in an ebonised finish during the 19thC which has been time-worn in some areas. The carvings display very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
