A striking pair of 17th‑century Italian carved oak furniture supports, originally formed as architectural legs or structural uprights from an important piece of early furniture — likely a cassone, credenza, or monumental table. Each support is carved from dense, well‑figured oak, displaying the bold sculptural vocabulary characteristic of Italian craftsmanship of the period.
The forms, incorporating classical winged female busts, swags, foliage and blank cartouches and clawed feet, are powerful and architectural, with deep modelling, strong profiles, and a commanding presence that speaks to their original role in supporting a substantial piece of furniture. The surfaces show a rich, time‑worn patina with traces of historic colour and centuries of handling, giving them tremendous decorative appeal.
These supports now make superb standalone sculptural elements — ideal as statement pieces, console legs, decorative brackets, or as part of a bespoke interior project. Their scale, age, and sculptural quality make them exceptional survivors of 17th‑century Italian furniture making.
Provenance: Italy. 17th Century. Acquired from a private collection on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, where they were hung upon a wall and displayed in their own right.
Material: Carved oak with rich aged patina.
Condition: Italy, 17th century. Deeply modelled architectural forms. Age‑related wear, surface marks, and colour variation. One support has been split and rejoined at the top of one head (see images 7, 10 and 11). Part of the foot is also missing at the base of the same support that has had the head repair.
