A charming and rare pair of early 19th-century American toleware wall sconces, crafted in painted tin with shaped backplates and candle holders. These pieces exemplify the folk art traditions of early American domestic metalwork—functional, decorative, and full of character.

Toleware refers to tin or thin metal objects that were painted and lacquered, often with floral or geometric motifs. Popular in the United States during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, such items were used in homes, taverns, and churches, offering affordable yet decorative lighting solutions.

These sconces retain traces of their original painted surface, now softened by time into a warm, mottled patina. Their form is simple yet elegant, with shaped edges and rolled candleholders. The craftsmanship suggests a regional workshop, possibly from Pennsylvania or New England, where toleware flourished as a vernacular art.

Surviving pairs are uncommon, especially with intact paint and original structure. Whether mounted in a hallway, kitchen, or folk art collection, they offer both visual charm and historical resonance.
