A Pair of 18th Century Continental Antique Giltwood and Silvered Wood Spiral-Twist Pricket Candlesticks, Probably Italian or Iberian

Each raised on a spreading circular foot turned with a band of gadrooning, the socle rising through a swelling knop to a tall barley-twist (spiral-turned) stem, surmounted by a dished drip-pan with a crimped, wavy-cut edge, fitted with a wrought iron pricket spike for an altar or ecclesiastical candle in place of the more usual socket. The surface retains scattered traces of the original gilding and silvering, now very substantially rubbed back through age and handling to expose the gesso ground and the turned timber (possibly limewood) beneath, giving the pair an attractively bleached, sun-faded patina. Old wax residue survives to both drip-pans and stems, consistent with genuine period use rather than later staging. The underside of each foot shows honest turning marks and a small, old central fixing hole, with minor associated losses to the gesso at the rims.
The pair is closely matched in scale and turning, with only the trifling variation in wax accretion and surface wear one would expect of hand-turned, hand-finished pieces rather than a later marriage.
Provenance: Probably Italian or Iberian, 18th century.
Material: Probably limewood with gilt-gesso.
Condition: Extensive wear and rubbing to the gilt-silvered decoration throughout, now reduced in large part to the gesso ground; small chips and losses to the gesso at the rims of the feet and pans (visible in the accompanying detail photographs); old wax residue to the pans and upper stems; drip-pans possibly associated tin liners of good age.
