A charming half-length portrait of a young woman, oil on canvas laid onto board, housed in a period gilt gesso oval frame with foliate cresting. The sitter is depicted in three-quarter pose against a dark landscape background, wearing a white muslin dress with short puffed sleeves and a pink sash — costume entirely consistent with the Regency period taste for neo-classical simplicity. Her dark unpowdered hair is worn loosely, further confirming the dating to around 1800–1815.

The handling is confident and the likeness appealing, the work of a competent provincial British portraitist working outside the metropolitan centres. The dark atmospheric landscape beyond the figure, just discernible at the edges of the oval aperture, suggests the composition may originally have been larger, subsequently reduced and relined to its present format — as is not uncommon with portraits of this period.

To summarise, and in our opinion...

"She has waited long enough."

A young woman — unknown, unnamed, and utterly captivating — gazes out across two centuries with quiet confidence. Whoever she was, she was important enough to sit for her portrait, important enough to be painted in the fashionable white muslin and pink sash of the Regency age, and important enough to hang in a house that no longer exists, in a family whose name has been forgotten.

She needs a new home. Perhaps it is yours?
