A charming and highly detailed pair of antique watercolours, finely executed in the miniature tradition of the Indian subcontinent.
These are a bit of a curveball for us, but given the highly decorative appeal, we couldn't resist acquiring them!
Each painting vividly portrays a marriage scene, rich in symbolism and ceremonial detail, offering a rare glimpse into pre‑British Raj artistry.
Dating to the early 19th century (or earlier), these works exemplify the refined techniques and vibrant palette associated with Mughal‑influenced court painting. The figures are delicately rendered, with expressive gestures and ornate attire that capture the grandeur of the occasion.
Period: Pre‑British Raj, early 19th century.
Medium: Watercolour/gouache on paper. Presented behind glass with a double slip (green inner slip with a gilded edge and cream outer slip with a gilded edge) and giltwood frame.
Subject: Marriage scenes, with finely observed detail and ceremonial motifs.
Provenance: Likely produced in Northern India, within the Mughal cultural sphere; however, painted by a British artist. An authority on such art has pointed out that the male and female subjects are portrayed with blue eyes. This, according to the authority/expert, is a trait of English painters, based in India, who were influenced by the Indian and Mughal artists of the time. The artist and sitters are unknown.
Condition: Age‑related wear consistent with antique works; colours remain strong and evocative. Reframed by the previous owner.
Dimensions:
Image 1 (with Peacock):
With frame: 14 ½" × 12" → 36.8 × 30.5 cm
Without frame: 7 ¼" × 4 ½" → 18.4 × 11.4 cm
Image 2 (with Two Kneeling Men):
With frame: 15 ¼" × 11 ¼" → 38.7 × 28.6 cm
Without frame: 8" × 4 ¼" → 20.3 × 10.8 cm
Together, these two watercolours form a harmonious pair, ideal for collectors of Indian art, Mughal period interest, or those seeking pieces that connect personal collections to broader historical narratives. Their rarity and charm make them not only decorative but also culturally significant.
