A mid-18th-century English delftware tankard, richly decorated in underglaze blue with a central cartouche of birds and an urn. Its generous form and pastoral motif capture the elegance of Georgian domestic life, while the tin-glazed surface, shaped handle, and pewter foot rim reflect the craftsmanship of England’s finest potters and metalsmiths. A striking addition to any collection of early ceramics or decorative drinkware.

Provenance: England. Mid-18th century.

Condition: There are minor rim frits. There is a very faint hairline on the back of the body. This is stable. The tankard displays well. Please refer to the images. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size: Height 14 cm  (5 1/2")

Historical Background:

Delftware — tin-glazed earthenware — was widely produced in England during the 18th century, with London, Bristol, and Liverpool as key centres. This tankard, likely from one of these hubs, exemplifies the blue and white aesthetic inspired by Chinese porcelain, which was highly fashionable among Georgian consumers.

The central cartouche, featuring birds perched upon an urn, reflects the decorative tastes of the period — a blend of pastoral charm and classical influence. Tankards like this were used for ale or cider and often served as both functional vessels and status symbols. Surviving examples in such condition are increasingly rare, especially with crisp glaze and intact handle.

To conclude, this is a vessel of charm and ceremony — where Georgian elegance meets the enduring beauty of English delft.
