A most appealing George II period oak chest of drawers, English, circa 1745, of notably small and well-balanced proportions — a size much sought after and increasingly difficult to find.
The rectangular top with moulded edge sits above an arrangement of two short drawers over three graduated long drawers, each retaining brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons. The whole is raised upon shaped bracket feet of good form.
Chests of this diminutive scale were made in far smaller numbers than their full-width counterparts, and their practicality in the modern interior — slotting comfortably into hallways, landings, and bedrooms where a standard chest will not — has made them perennial favourites among collectors of early oak. The honest colour and patination of this example speak to nearly three centuries of domestic use and careful keeping.
A charming and eminently useable piece of mid-Georgian vernacular furniture.
Provenance: England. Mid-18th-century.
Material: Oak with brass handles.
Condition: In solid, sound condition throughout, with the expected light marks of age and use to the top entirely consistent with its date. Two small batons to the rear of the top and one backboard possibly replaced.
Dimensions: Width: 29¼ in / 74 cm x Height: 30¼ in / 77 cm x Depth: 17¾ in / 45 cm
