What is a chafing dish?
The term "chafing dish" comes from the French word "chauffer", which means to make warm. Embers or hot coals would have been placed in the brass pan and a plate or bowl with edible contents would have been placed above. The embers/hot coals would keep the contents of the plate or bowl warm.
