A charming mid-17th Century English antique joined oak wainscot armchair.
Peg-joined construction.
The back with a shaped and heavily carved cresting rail incorporating scrolls, stylised foliage and a flower over a single panel back, again heavily carved with foliage and a naive tulip.
With shaped arms over turned front arm supports of baluster shape. The original panel seat with thumbnail edge remains. Below, the front and side supporting rails are decorated with a lunette frieze. The front legs are turned. The back legs are of plain form. The front and back legs are united by peripheral stretchers. There has never been any trace of a rear stretcher.
Condition - good overall as per the images. The large panel to the back has a couple of losses due to wear (again refer to the images) however the panel is stable overall and this remains a useable chair. Some wear is evident to the base of the legs as one would expect given the chair has been used for the last 370 years!
