A superbly patinated and fresh-to-market English antique oak back stool
Mid-17th Century in date, circa 1640.

An armchair, rather than a back stool of similar design and, incorporating an almost identically carved back panel, is held in the collection of the V & A Museum, London and is also featured in the museums book "The Book of Chairs", page 18.
With a carved and fretted cresting rail incorporating hearts, flanked by pyramid - shaped finials over a panelled back carved in low relief, depicting a flower flanked by fruiting vines. The plank seat is supported by aprons with carved linear decoration over turned front legs (the back two are of plain form) and all are united by peripheral stretchers.
Condition - as per the images. Good overall. The seat board has been replaced historically - a common theme with early chairs. This is a sound chair with a great surface skin and is ready to go.
