Mid 17th Century Antique Stoneware “Witch Bottle” Excavated in Norfolk / Bellarmine Jug / Bartmannkrug, Circa 1650

A mid 17thC German antique stoneware bellarmine jug or bartmannkrug, Circa 1650.

By repute, this example was found buried under the threshold of a Norfolk property here in the UK. It would have originally contained pins and urine with a cork stopper and being buried at a doorway, was most probably placed there to ward off evil spirits.

Made from stoneware with salt glaze. Decorated with a typical mask of a bearded man (presumably Cardinal Bellarmine) and an unidentified medallion in the form of a Coat of Arms.

Condition - as per the images. The carry handle is missing and the bulbous body shows indications of restoration. The jug displays very well.  A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
