A 16th-century wooden sculpture depicting the Baptism of Christ.
The carved figure depicts a bearded man kneeling (Jesus) being baptised, with detailed carving that shows textured hair and garments. The composition includes other figures arranged around the central figure, with John the Baptist administering the baptism and possibly angels or witnesses to the event. John bears the symbol of a lion upon his chest - representing him as the forerunner to Christ, who embodied a boldness and fearlessness that set him apart as the original “Lion for Christ.”
The sculpture appears to be made from oak and shows considerable age, with a rich patina. The carving style and execution suggest that it is from the Renaissance period, possibly of Northern European origin, based on the sculptural style, wood type, and aged patina.
The Baptism of Christ is one of the most frequently depicted scenes in Christian art, representing a pivotal moment in the Gospel narratives where Jesus begins his public ministry. The detailed craftsmanship visible in the facial features, drapery, and overall composition indicates this was likely created by a skilled woodcarver for a church or religious setting.
Provenance: Northern Europe. Late 16th century.
Condition: Please refer to the images. In good order overall.
Dimensions: Height 36 cm (14 1/8 inches).
A rare survival of Renaissance devotion — John the Baptist carved in oak, his prophetic voice preserved in wood.
