A 16th-Century antique stained glass armorial shield set within a lead frame incorporating a rampant lion supporter flanked by three roses and an inverted scallop shell.

The symbolisim is most likely to be of Christian significance. The scallop shell may well indicate that the person who had this commissioned, and another panel we are offering for sale separately, made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Symbolism  - its possible meaning within the glass panel:

1. **Lion**: Often symbolizes courage, strength, and nobility. In Christian symbolism, the lion is also associated with Christ, representing his role as the "Lion of Judah."

2. **Roses**: The red roses can symbolize love, sacrifice, and the blood of Christ. They are also associated with the Virgin Mary, representing purity and grace.

3. **Shell**: The scallop shell is commonly associated with pilgrimage, particularly to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. It symbolizes the journey of faith and the Christian pilgrimage.

Each symbol may also have historical and heraldic significance as well, often reflecting the identity or lineage of a family. The combination of these elements could suggest themes of faith, valor, and the journey of life.

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - Please refer to the images. There is a crack to the centre upright panel which has been naively glued. This was done at some point prior to our acquisition. The glass displays very well and is vibrant in colour.

Size - 9" x 7 3/4"
