A matched pair of 19th-century carved oak Gothic Revival bosses with giltwood detailing, acquired directly from the family of a workman involved in the restoration of Manchester Cathedra post World-War II and the damage caused by the blitz. Each boss is crisply carved with stylised foliate motifs, finished in gold leaf and mounted on oak backplates.
The carving is rhythmic and symmetrical, with strong architectural presence and ecclesiastical resonance. Surface wear and oxidation to the gilding enhance the sculptural depth and historic character.
A rare survival of Victorian ecclesiastical ornament — ideal for collectors of Gothic Revival fragments, cathedral salvage, or decorative architectural woodwork.
Provenance: England. 19th century. Gothic revival. Salvaged as above.
