This exceptional oak livery cupboard is a masterpiece of Jacobean craftsmanship, commanding attention with its imposing presence and elaborate carved decoration. Dating to the 17th century, it showcases the extraordinary skill of English woodworkers through its striking arabesque motifs, arranged in repeating panels across the double doors. Each carved medallion displays intricate scrollwork that catches the light beautifully across the aged oak’s warm, honeyed patina.
The ornamental frieze running along the top features a continuous band of Gothic‑inspired arches, while decorative ironwork hinges add both function and visual interest. The lower section mirrors the upper design, featuring three additional carved panels that create a harmonious rhythm throughout the piece.
What makes this cupboard truly remarkable is its provenance: Old Hunstanton Hall in Norfolk, a tangible connection to centuries of English history. Condition - Good overall. Sturdy construction. There are two rows of turned wood pegs internally. One peg is missing. Please refer to the images.
