A refined Louis XVI period French casket, elegantly covered in natural galuchat (stingray skin) in a soft olive‑green tone and mounted with finely cast gilt ormolu (gilded bronze). The domed lid, rounded corners, and crisp neoclassical mounts reflect the restrained luxury of the late 18th century, when galuchat was one of the most fashionable materials in Parisian decorative arts.
The gilt bronze frame is decorated with delicate scrolls, rosettes, and classical ornament, all typical of the Louis XVI aesthetic. The interior retains its original green textile lining, creating a harmonious unity of colour and texture.
A beautifully made and highly tactile object, combining rare materials with elegant 18th‑century design. Perfect for collectors of French decorative arts, luxury boxes, or Neoclassical objets d'art.
What is Galuchat?
Galuchat is the historic French term for shagreen, a luxury material made from the skin of stingray or dogfish. It is named after Jean‑Claude Galuchat, an 18th‑century master leatherworker who supplied the court of Louis XV and Louis XVI.
Galuchat was prized for:
-
Its distinctive pebbled texture
-
Its durability
-
Its ability to take rich dyes
-
its association with high‑end Parisian craftsmanship
During the reign of Louis XVI, galuchat was used for small luxury objects: caskets, étuis, nécessaire cases, writing boxes, and personal accessories.
