A 17thC Continental antique table casket of small size made from lead.
Used for the transportation and storage of small quantities of the three Sacramental holy oils, namely; the oil of catechumens (oleum catechumenorumor oleum sanctorum), the oil of the infirm (oleum infirmorum) and holy chrism (sacrum chrisma) – these oils are used in the administration of the sacraments.
The shaped lid with central knop over a sarcophuguss-shaped base, opens to reveal an interior fitted with a single lead sheet with three circular apertures which once accommodated three ampules of holy oil.
The lid is joined to the carcass by way of two hinges which still function.
The front external panel of the casket is inscribed with three words. The first word is illegible. The other two words state "Chrisma Infirm" - relating to two of the oils. There is a further illegible script to the base.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - Please refer to the images which are self explanatory. There is an older solder repair to one hinge where it meets the lid. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
