Late 19th-Century Antique Treen Fairground "Knockdown" Figure / Jue De Massacre
A late 19th-century antique folk-art carved treen "knockdown" figure. Also known as "Jue de Massacre".
Possibly French origin.
This figure would have been situated on a fairground stall where ballsd could be paid for and thrown at him in an attempt to knock him over, no doubt with a number of other figures of similar stature.
Depicted full length and naively carved wearing a suit and and shirt and tie and belt, he has an iron hinge at his base verso (see last image) to enable him to be pushed over on impact with a ball and then repositioned standing.
With traces of original polychrome/paint.
A charming piece of folk-art.
