A wonderfully honest late 18th-century Welsh three‑legged milking stool, hewn from solid timber with all the irregularity, wear, and working life you want from a true vernacular piece. The thick slab top shows centuries of use — knife marks, burnishing, and the soft rounding that only time can produce — while the three splayed stick legs give it the stability needed for uneven dairy floors.

This is pure rural craftsmanship: no pretence, no refinement, just a functional object shaped by hand and necessity. The stool carries the scars of its working past, with surface abrasions, age‑related shrinkage, and the dry, tactile patina that collectors of primitive Welsh furniture prize.

Three‑legged stools were essential in dairies, byres, and smallholdings across Wales and the Borders. Their tripod form allowed them to sit firmly on packed earth, flagstones, or uneven barn floors — a practical solution that became a defining feature of regional furniture.

A superb decorative accent for rustic interiors, farmhouse settings, or anyone who appreciates the authenticity of early vernacular furniture.

Provenance: Wales. Late 18th-century.

Milking stools were indispensable tools in rural life from the 17th century onward. In Wales, they were typically:

Hand‑carved from local hardwoods

Three‑legged for stability on uneven ground

Slab‑topped or board‑topped, depending on the region

Unrefined and functional, made by farmers rather than joiners

Their simplicity is precisely what makes them so collectable today. Each stool is unique, shaped by the hand that made it and the life it lived.

Material: Indigenous timbers.

Condition: Please refer to the images.
