A rare and evocative late 18th century Irish armchair of primitive "Gibson" type, crafted in solid wood with a hard spindle back and honest, utilitarian charm. This example reflects the vernacular craftsmanship of rural Ireland, with a robust silhouette and tactile surface softened by age.

With a solid, thick, broad ash top rail and sticks/ spindles to the rear. The armrests are constructed from sycamore. The shaped seat is also formed from sycamore. Supported overall on four ash legs united by an "H" stretcher. Superb colour and patina.

Date: Circa 1780–1800

Origin: Ireland

Material: Ash and sycamore.

Features: Hard spindle back, primitive form, brown finish

Excellent Provenance. The chair comes from the collection of Michael and Elizabeth Feller, Upper Slaughter Manor, Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, England, adding depth and distinction to its historical narrative. One of the best collections of vernacular furniture in recent times.

Condition: Structurally sound; age-related wear; excellent provenance. There are traces of old, inactive worm, particularly on the legs (long since gone but treated too as a precautionary measure). All joints are sound, and the chair is ready to go.

Dimensions: Back Height 94 cm x Width 62 cm x Depth 43 cm (37" x 24 1/2" x 17")

A compelling piece for collectors of Irish vernacular furniture, primitive antiques, and Windsor-type seating.
