A mid 18th-century Italian antique carved treen Memento Mori book box.
"Memento Mori" literally means "Remember you must die".
Memento Mori is an artistic or symbolic trope acting as a reminder of the inevitability of death. The concept has its roots in the philosophers of classical antiquity and Christianity, and appeared in funerary art and architecture from the medieval period onwards.
The skull and bone are depicted resting upon three books of graduated size. The lid rotates to reveal an interior void of any fittings.
Retaining most of its original polychromy.
This is a rare item and displays very well.
Provenace - Ex-private collection, Austria.
