Late 18th Century English Antique Treen Chess Box
Late 18th Century English Antique Treen Chess Box
A late 18thC antique wooden box.
Nailed construction.
The lid is joined to the carcass by way of hinges and opens to reveal a void interior.
The external surface has acquired the most lovely signs of age with a part-worn surface and craquelure.
The lid is painted with the inscription "British Workman No.1". The front is inscribed "Chess Room".
Condition - There is surface wear commensurate with age. Whilst no doubt originally used for the storage of chess pieces, the lid has had an aperture cut into it and may well have been used as a money box at some point during its later life. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
