A late 18th‑century English antique wrought‑iron adjustable hanging candleholder, forged with the practical ingenuity characteristic of Georgian domestic lighting. The long vertical stem, topped with a decorative hook, has a sprung bracket that allows the candleholder and drip pan to be raised or lowered, giving the user control over both height and intensity — a vital feature in cottages and workshops where a single flame had to serve multiple tasks.
The forged arm terminates in a simple circular pan, while the suspension hook and slender shaft create a clean, architectural silhouette. The surface retains its deep, honest oxidation, with the tactile irregularities of hand‑forged ironwork. These adjustable hanging forms are far scarcer than fixed rushlights or wall sconces, making this a particularly appealing example for collectors of early lighting.
A superb piece of vernacular English metalware — functional, sculptural, and rich with period character.

Condition: Oxidised in part due to age. Please refer to the images. The rise and fall spring mechanism/bracket still functions.
