A handsome West Country comb-back Windsor armchair in ash and elm, dating to the late 18th century. The tall stick back rises to a gracefully shaped cresting rail with swept ears — the "comb" from which this distinctive form takes its name — supported on a single bank of slender turned spindles. The continuous bowed arm sweeps forward to scrolled hand-holds, carried on raked spindle supports and turned arm posts, framing the sitter in the generous, embracing manner characteristic of the type.
The solid elm seat is well dished and saddled, retaining a fine rippled figure and a deep, mellow patina born of long domestic use. It is raised upon splayed and ring-turned legs of ash, united by a robust H-form stretcher that lends the chair its sturdy vernacular stance.
The chair bears an old brass strap to the cresting rail, an honest and characterful early reinforcement that speaks to generations of faithful service, and the legs have at some point been reduced in height — both entirely in keeping with a working country chair of this age. The colour and surface throughout are most pleasing, with the warm honeyed tones and worn highlights that collectors of early Windsor furniture prize above all else.
A sculptural and architectural example of English vernacular seat furniture, equally at home in a country kitchen, hall or study.
